Pachaug Pond
Griswold Connecticut

A comprehensive
guide to Connecticut fresh waters.
Pachaug Pond
is located in the township of
Griswold in New London County Connecticut, approximately 10 miles
northeast of the city of Norwich.
The pond is artificial in origin, being
formed by the impounding of
the Pachaug River. The normal surface elevation of the water is 161
feet above sea level; however, the level is normally lowered during the
winter to allow for maintenance of privately owned property. The
surface area of the pond is approximately 870 acres; the pond normally
hold about 1.8 billion gallons of water. The pond has a maximum depth
of 16 feet and an average depth of about 6 feet. For a look at
the water depths of Pachaug Pond, please see - The

Fish species found in the pond include:
bluegill and pumpkinseed
sunfish, largemouth bass,
golden shiner, white yellow perch, brown bullhead, white catfish,
american eel, white sucker, black crappie, and chain pickerel. Sunfish,
yellow, yellow perch, and chain pickerel are the most abundant species

numbers of trophy size largemouth bass (5 to 7 lbs.) also are found in
the pond,
reflecting a high rate of growth.

The bottom materials of
Pachaug Pond consist primarily of fine sand,
silt, and organic muck.
Hard bottom materials, such as
rock and
boulders, are limited to few localized shoreline areas and bottom
sections that have steep slopes.
Pachaug Pond is fed by the
Pachaug River, Burton Brook, Billings Brook, and several small
intermittent brooks.
Drainage from the pond is northward
into the
Pachaug River, which flows westward into the Quinebaug River.
The pond
has a watershed of about 52 square miles (33,280 acres), much of which
is undeveloped.
The watershed is composed of
approximately 75 percent
of woodlands and 10 percent water bodies and wetlands;
the remainder is
predominately open fields and agricultural land.
Public access is provided through a
state owned boat launch is located
on the north shore of the pond adjacent to the Pachaug Pond dam.

planks,

trailers.
In addition there parking and
fishing facilities for
the handicapped. A marked channel provides access to the lake.
